The A.J.College of Education came into existence in the year 1967. It was the offspring of the famous Andhra Jateeya Vidya Parishat which was established by the famous Andhra Trio – Sri Kopalle Hanumantha Rao, Sri Mutnuri Krishna Rao and Sri Bhogaraju Pattabhi Seetharamaiah. It is a sister institution to the erstwhile Andhra Jateeya Kalasala established in 1910 by the A.J.Vidya Parishat. It is more populary known as the National College as it was established during the nationwide movement for freedom.

It is more popularly known as the National College as it was established during the nationwide movement for freedom.

The college was established mainly to cater to the needs of the graduates of the Krishna and West Godavari districts. The first secretary of the college, Kalaprapurna Sriman S.T.G.Varadachary, named the institution as Andhra Jateeya Bodhana Kalasala, A.J.Bodhana Kalasala for short. However, in 1971, the Director of Public Instruction, Government of Andhra Pradesh, gave direction that all Training Colleges in the state should be renamed as Colleges of Education. As a result, in the year 1971, the A.J.Bodhana Kalasala was rechristened as Andhra Jateeya College of Education, A.J.College of Education for short.

The college was admitted to grant-in-aid during 1977-78, and was accorded permanent affiliation by the Andhra University during 1978-79. Later the college came under the affiliation of the Nagarjuna University when the entire Krishna District was brought under its jurisdiction.

Till 1986 the college was managed by a governing body constituted by the A.J.Vidya Parishat. But in 1986, the Department of Endowments, Government of Andhra Pradesh took over the administration of the A.J.Vidya Parishat and its allied institutions. At present the A.J.College of Education is administered by an Executive Officer of the Endowments Department who functions as Secretary and Correspondent.

Right from 1967 the college has produced over 10000 teachers. Among them over 3000 are women. It is a matter of pride for the college that the first batch trainee of our college Sri Kolluri Koteswara Rao was on the floor of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council for a pretty long period of time from the teacher's constituency from 1968 till the council was made defunct. When the universities in Andhra Pradesh permitted B.Ed. students to write the examinations in the vernacular, the staff of our college was the pioneers in bringing the reading material and text books in Telugu. In addition the staff of the college was drafted by the Andhra and Sri Venkateswara universities for preparing the reading material for their respective B.Ed. correspondence courses. The College also was a centre for the B.Ed. Programme of the Andhra University through distance mode since the inception of the course and till it became defunct. It also served as a centre for the Bharatidasan University B.Ed. correspondence course. Presently it is a study centre for the Indira Gandhi National Open University B.Ed. programme through distance mode.
